Photographing Yosemite’s Horsetail Falls – 2012 Dates

Back by popular demand, I’ve calculated the best dates to shoot Horsetail Falls in Yosemite National Park in 2012. Similar to 2011, I used the same procedure that I originally used in 2010 to calculate the range of acceptable times to view or photograph the falls. For 2012, the best viewing times are between February 15, 2012 and February 28, 2012 with the absolute peak date being February 21, 2012.

For a more detailed explanation of the procedure used to determine these dates, be sure to check out my blog post Photographing Yosemite’s Horsetail Falls.

  1. Hi Andrew,

found the link to your website on Michael Fry’s blog. Thanks for doing all this math for us! Super guideline, and I’m happy I booked my room for Feb. 20/22nd!
    Lets hope for more snow.

    Greetings
    Susanne

  4. Ralph,

There’s a section on viewing locations for the falls about half way down in my blog post here: http://blog.andrewkee.com/2010/02/23/photographing-yosemites-horsetail-falls/

I’ve also created a map showing the locations of the two most common places to see the falls here: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=p&msa=0&msid=118338699338662528717.00048048f0c58d00e5e39&ll=37.727586,-119.624162&spn=0.01188,0.021458&z=15&source=embed

  5. Thanks for your considerable effort. I landed in a wheelchair a few years ago, which has limited my avocation of outdoor natural light photography, so my question to you is: Do you have a recommendation for the best locale that is reasonably accessible by manual wheelchair?
Thank you, Andrew, your time and knowledge are appreciated.

  6. Steve,

Of the two most common locations to photograph the falls, the El Capitan Picnic Area is definitely much more wheelchair accessible. There is a rather large parking area where the falls can be seen from. The Southside Drive location would pose some access challenges for you – it is a hundred or so yards off the road down by the Merced River and there is no trail access – it requires “cross-country” travel to get there.

    Good luck shooting the falls!
